Brake Service

The hard semi-metallic or ceramic friction material of brake pads can last 50-60,000 miles with the right driving habits. Because it wears so slowly, it can be difficult to even notice a gradual decline in braking performance. These are all signs of impending brake problems, however:

  • Tendency for one or more wheels to lock up and skid while braking
  • Noticeable pull to one side while braking
  • Longer stopping distances
  • Brake pedal travels farther toward the floor before engaging
  • Brake pedal feels “spongy” or “soft” underfoot
  • Noticeable vibration or pulsation through brake pedal while braking
  • Squealing, groaning or grinding noise while braking

Your disc brakes are designed not unlike the hand brakes on a bicycle. The wheels are bolted to smooth steel discs called rotors; the rotors are then enclosed by a caliper. When you step on the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure actuates a Brake Repair Boise, IDpiston in the caliper, which presses the brake pads against the rotor to slow the vehicle down via friction.

Some brake pads feature a spring steel tab which protrudes at a right angle from the pad’s backing plate. This tab is a wear indicator which drags along the rotor when the pads are at a minimum thickness, alerting the driver. If you hear that metallic grinding noise mentioned above, it can mean two things: either your wear indicator is dragging, or the pads are worn to a point where the backing plate is exposed and the plate’s rivets are digging into the brake rotor!

Because brakes do wear so slowly, it’s important to keep up on brake inspections. At Miracle Tire Car Care Center,  we recommend a twice-yearly inspection of the brake pads – they should be replaced when they reach a minimum thickness of about ¼”.
